SMI Business Impact's Vision: Creating Valuable Businesses
SMI Business Impact’s goal - our Vision you could say - is to create great businesses that reward their owners or shareholders with returns (both profits and business value) that exceed the risk, the investment and the time that they put in. Families put up with a lot from their business owner spouse or parent, who just never seems to work 'normal' hours and this needs to be rewarded eventually also.
It's no mean feat to achieve this Vision for your business and while we have the strategies, the tactics, the methodologies and systems to do it, one of our biggest challenges is to get everybody on your team on board and contributing to the process - the buy in. So, in a lot of ways, that becomes our key role!
We Have A History: Experience & Skills To Benefit Your Business
The SMI Business Impact story goes back to 2001 when Simon Ackland, after a 16 year financial services career, started a management consulting business to achieve some personal freedom and the opportunity to grow more than remaining an employee would allow.
Simon joined a young property funds management company, Growth Equities Mutual, in 1985, which grew to become a major player in property funds management over the subsequent 10 years building to $1.6 billion in funds under management. He then worked with Bankers Trust and Deutsche Bank extending his financial services experience into much larger organisations. His early assignments in management consulting exposed him to small and medium sized businesses with their inherent shortages of people and capital...but never ideas and dreams. Many experiences and lessons have shaped and developed the SMI Business Impact methodology and approach to business.
In 2005, he outsourced the design and development of a systemised business development, exit planning and marketing methodology which included 100's of strategies and programs for growing just about any business and maximising shareholder value. These systems were provided by an international business development company based in the UK after researching some 3,500 business and marketing plans and have been extensively developed to suit the Australian business market place.
Like all successful companies, the business was systemised and auto-piloted so that it could achieve results for clients effectively and efficiently without blowing the budget.
Another corporate refugee, Barry Hatton, joined Simon in 2006. Barry had experienced the thrill of building a business with a small group of partners from virtually start-up to 50 employees in the Technology market only to see it gobbled up by a series of acquisitions which saw him end up as an employee with IBM...about as big a company as you can get.
In addition, the Company has relationships with two other experienced although independent, consultants, both of whom have been extensively trained in our methodologies. These consultants have valuable additional expertise including global assignments with organisations like McKinseys.
In 2008, SMI Business Impact was formed as a rebranding to better reflect the direction and vision of the business and the services were further expanded to include Digital Marketing and Internet Marketing. We offer these additional products and services through a separate website under the brand SMI Digital.
The philosophy behind SMI Digital is that we build more than just websites, we create internet marketing strategies with the website being structured to add to the overall business strategy, not just being an online brochure...something we struggled to find among the many web development companies we have seen and used.
Like all good names, SMI means something to its founders and helps to drive our passion and hopefully an understanding of what we stand for with our clients and prospective clients. After years of experience seeing both good and bad businesses, we have discovered that while success is driven by many factors, the ones that have the greatest Impact on a Business are Strategy, Marketing and Innovation...there you have it, SMI Business Impact.
